Chapter Thirteen

The next morning as Alex scrambled Lily’s eggs, he got a call from Hank in Mississippi.

“Hello?” Alex was shocked to hear from him but tried to hide it from his voice. Hank had made it very clear the day before that he wanted nothing to do with Alex.

“Hi, Alex.” Hank sounded resigned. “I was thinking about your little situation yesterday. I hate to say it, but something clicked about the fellow you’re looking for.”

“That’s fantastic news. Anything helps.”

“I’m decently sure he hung around with that Jasper guy. The one who lives in the cabin on the other side of the island? I’m sure you know him. He was normally in charge of the parties on the beach, right?”

Alex scribbled Jasper’s name across a pad of paper. “That name rings a bell.”

“But you didn’t hear it from me,” Hank countered. “I want to come back to Mackinac next summer. I don’t need to have enemies when I get there.”

“You have my word.”

Alex dropped his phone and got back to the eggs just in the nick of time. Soon, he spread them across a yellow plate, crowded the eggs with bacon, and added a heaping pile of roasted potatoes. When he wheeled the breakfast tray to the elevator and then to Lily’s door, she answered it and said, “You’re too good to us.” She then cleared the distance between them in the doorway and kissed him on the lips. A jolt of electricity bounced up and down Alex’s spine.

In the suite, Kevin buzzed around with a plastic dinosaur toy while Ralphie rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

“We had a tough night,” Lily explained as they set up the table by the window. “Ralphie woke up at two, then at four, then again at six-thirty.”

“Poor guy,” Alex said, rubbing the top of Ralphie’s head.

“Suffice it to say, we’re exhausted.” Lily smiled. “But I have an appointment with Emma a little bit later today. Could you watch the boys while I go?”

“Of course!” Alex was thrilled to help. “We won’t get into too much trouble. I promise.”

That morning, Lily headed for Emma’s, leaving Alex, Kevin, and Ralphie in a heap of toys and coloring books. At noon, she returned with burgers and French fries, and the four of them sat by the sitting room fire and ate. “It shouldn’t be long now,” Lily said of Emma.

“Are you nervous?” Alex asked.

“A little bit. I’ve done so many deliveries, but each one is different. I want to be sharp and ready for whatever happens,” Lily explained. “Emma’s afraid. I can feel it. But more than that, she’s ready for this bedrest to be over.”

After lunch, Alex cleaned up, kissed Lily, and headed out. He hadn’t yet told her about his lead with Jasper, “the guy in the cabin,” as he didn’t want to get her hopes up. There was no reason Jasper knew anything; more than that, there was no reason Jasper should tell him anything. To Jasper, Alex was probably a yuppie, the son of the richest guy on the island.
